So, I'm touring this summer through the midwest and south east with Mitch the Champ & my French friend Giz Xtramedium; we had an awesome show at the Hobbit Hole on the 17th with The Taxpayers, Harpo, Tim Blood and Hail Seizures before taking off the next morning.

I don't have the time to regail you with stories at the moment because we're about to start a show at Cream City Collective in Milwuakee, WI!

Mosquito's Bites

I'm going to pretend that these itchy bits surrounding my fresh tattoos all came from the same bug. I'm going to choose to believe that now they're now (at this very moment) sitting in a tiny room, lit by an even tinier lamp doing calligraphy because of they've sucked ink blood of an ampersand.

But then, I also believe that I'm a typographic wizard casting spells that manifest through the relationship of flour & water, but bread is some sort of miracle.

I just spent a moment going back through my archives and it was pretty cool seeing me develop before my eyes. Both in terms of style, what I'm doing, what I look like and who I'm hanging around with (I see Allen come into my life, then The Fighting Trikes and now that my images are slowly waning Diamond Pony is kicking it & I'm making excuses of being too busy dancing to upload proper blog posts with photos and/or videos).

It was SO COOL going back through and reminding myself that I can draw and sketch and I do do do do awesome things and I'm surrounded by awesome people! I don't particularly see that inspiring me to do more proper blog posts, but hopefully maybe some sort of fantastical event will change that because it would be nice to continue to track my progress as a person.

then again, maybe my current progression is simply an expression of thoughts instead of images?

It really is a bit too bad that I can't just export my facebook updates, pics & videos onto this blog so that we could really see a growth pattern.

Keeping up with myself

Someday maybe I'll post some pictures or videos of all the awesomeness that I've been involved in and surrounded by, but until then I'm just going to enjoy it and share it with those around me (sorry I don't consider you in my immediate proximity, blogger based internets)

I've been posting as much as I can to the facebook because that's where I can tag everybody, immediately share with everybody, conversations happen and my friends are already hanging out there like it's a friggen water-cooler!

Just to glaze over it all:

Spring break was absolute insanity.

I came back to Cheney afterwards and was so inspired by our adventures I wrote a song that's been catching like wildfire! I've since stopped playing music as State of Nature and I've re-adopted the musical moniker of Paco. BUT I've been trying to play fewer and fewer solo shows because I recently helped start a traveling singer / songwriter band called The Sky is a Suitcase! Tony James, Allen Duffy, and I play old State of Nature songs, Tony James songs, Duffy Allen songs, old folk songs, AJJ & the like, and we collaborated on a new song, too!

The Hobbit Hole has been hosting a whole heard of happenings! Bonfires on the roof, sunset blush with the sunrise, brunches that last from 10am to midnight, stick and poke tattoo parties, awesome music, great food, and wonderful people!

Sometimes I feel silly using so many exclamation marks, but I'm not sure how to accurately express how excited I am about everything (damn near all the time).

The weekend of Friday the 13th was absolute insanity.

and it just keeps going and going and going!

On the horizon is my Senior Thesis exhibition for my BFA in VCD and I'll finally release what I've been working on for so long! The reception is at the art building gallery 6pm on May 27th. We get to start cleaning, paintings and hanging works this coming Saturday! Whoo!

Anti-Squatch is coming up! Instead of traveling across the state and spending a million dollar bills, a sizable crew will be traversing across the palouse fields for a free concert with some epic bands (and free camping)! Homemade circuit bending workshops, a million bands, and campfire rock?! Yup.

THEN Mitch The Champ is going to be in town!

I'm having enough trouble keeping up with myself, let alone trying to keep you up to date with me ;)

Wombo Combo was recently invited into the lovely local radio station of KYRS for our friend Mikhael's broadcast the All Ages Show! Our good friend Colin Osgood was kind enough to video tape the nonsense that followed for those of you out there populating the internet. Enjoy?

So of course I had to join in with the fun :)

Speaking of State of Nature there's a facebook link for us/me on the ShmeriousBlahg home page. AND we are / I am playing a show at The Gazebo in Spokane on May 13th along with our friends Fizzlin Dicks, The Lot Lizards and the party pizza that is Wombo Combo!

State of Nature & Silliness

Whoa! I finally got my shit together for State of Nature and made a Bandcamp page! It's got my first two mini-albums with album art and all mah lyrics (it felt good to finally get it all down).

My first ukulele based album, I Got Nothin.
&
My first guitar based album, Powered By Greed.

Hopefully someday soon I will finish tabbing everything out and be able to put that online, too! We'll see if I'm able to do 'I Got Nothin' or not because I definitely don't know how to play any of those songs anymore... I'll probably upload some stuff for 'Powered by Greed', but almost all of those songs have been re-written (maybe I'll get some multi-instrument recordings online someday, too!)

For the 2nd Annual YoSpo Arts Extravaganza I put myself on display! For the four hour reception I covered myself in typography with ink and a dip pen. I drew inspiration from overheard conversations and clips of quotes.

Partway through the night I took a half hour break from my pedestal to perform with the band Wombo Combo, but returned to my room to finish inking as much skin as I was able.

The event was totally awesome and I hope to be more involved with the wonderful people behind this!

Tonight and tonight only, The 2nd Annual YoSpo Arts Extravaganza!

I will be there doing both performance art (between 7-11pm) and then Wombo Combo will be playing a set at 9pm. If you're in the area, come on down it should be a blast!

So, there were a bunch of awesome literary submissions to the event and the fantastic Ryan Weech asked me to typographize some titles for the pieces. I can't wait to see what the finished zine looks like, but here's a preview of what changed hands. (click for larger image, of course)

I did this papercraft as a present for my good friend Nick Bellotti. He was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease while on the most epic of adventures in California. Now he's settled up in Spokane and all those that surround him love him, he's amazing. He's the best around and nothing ever gets him down.

A soft roll on the tympani coincides with the rising flutes and violins. The trumpets and cymbals crash in syncopation as the spotlights flood the velvet curtain. A microphone briefly crackles before a booming voice is projected into the chaos. "And now presenting, the mini comic of the mini adventures of (who else but your heroes and mine) mini Dude & Guy!" The curtains quickly drawn away to reveal what you've all been waiting for.

The curtain closes and the house lights rise to a dim. The voice beckons you out to the lobby for a stretch and some snacks. Intermission.

The finished version of a sketch I've been watching gather dust; I love how it turned out.

See, sometimes my nights are filled with more than just dreams. Ideas careen and crash into my skull and force their way out in the middle of the night. Sometimes it's story ideas, sometimes it's changes to a current project or sometimes it's semi-prophetic block quotes. I used to just ignore them or laugh and roll over to return to sleep. Now I'm getting the feeling that some of these ideas are much more precious than a few more minutes under the sheets. So although the never ending list continues to grow at an alarming rate, at least I know I'll never be bored because I'm backlogged with projects till the apocalypse and beyond.

I posted a sketch of the top guy awhile ago and I finally finished him up. The second guy is based on a conversation I was eavesdropping into. These were a blast to do and maybe someday I'll produce more strange snippets of conversations (I can already feel some ideas leaking onto the list).

Typrojeckt Progress & Test Booklet!

This week from the Hobbit Hole! The first two pages from the Typrojeckt P&T Booklet. The first one is a watercolor and ink piece based on Olicana Smooth and it says 'making soy milk'. The second page is an ink and water piece that says 'reading' and 'homework' in my own handwriting and then 'Typographic time out' based on St Friska.

The Typographic Progress and Test Booklet is my little sketch/idea book I made for myself to fill up with color/font/style tests for my BFA project (more information coming soon). Plus I get to draw fonts and do typographic watercolors as homework! Yes!

oh, and I guess I'll mention the shmicroblahg that appeared in the right sidebar over the weekend. I'll be updating this section with photos of art or food or whatevs from my phone. Maybe every once and awhile I'll mass my micros together for a mega micro blog, but now I'm thinking too much.

Going the Distance

And so it begins! Here's one of the progress bars I've made myself to tally the process of my 9 months project that is the Graphic Design BFA Exhibition.

I'm not going to spill the beans about the project to you interneters just quite yet. I'll be posting process photos as they come and I'll reveal my secret plans bit by bit.
I'm betting my place is going to look no cleaner than this over the course of the project.

So, last night (9 hours after the Comic Book Challenge ended) there was a Concert at the Cave! The Hobbit Hole was lucky enough to host the final show for Iji and Mega Bog's summer tour, and Harpo's last show for a good long while. Between those bands an awesome female fronted punk/hardcore band name Agatha played! The cave was rocked.

So, local band Harpo played their last show because this morning their guitarist Mitch (look up) took off for a trip with his good friend Captain Bones (Krista). They're hoping to eventually land at Chris Clavin's commune in Indiana. Best of luck! We love you and we'll miss you kids.

Interestingly enough, over the summer Mitch, Krista & Tony (Harpo's bass player) took me to see Iji and Mega Bog's summer tour kick off in Seattle! Beautiful, right? Totally. Know what else is beautiful? My neighbors came over to see the end of the show and give me two gallons of fresh pressed apple cider from their weekend adventure. I love life!

Someday there will be more goodies from this show to upload. For I think it's time to re-adjust to sleep and school.

24 Hours Later

Yeah, that's right, Spider Man pinata! This thing was made from adamantium I swear, took the kids a few tries to put a dent in it.

A ComicSmith Cake and then everyone working hard maybe sometime around the twelve hour mark.

Oh man. I was NOT prepared for the task of 24 pages in 24 hours. My brain is melted. I'm a jerk, I shouldn't be making a post, I should be sleeping or something.

Thank the gods I had Allen Duffy, Tiffany Harms and Jeremy Whittington. If those kids hadn't be so lively and entertaining I would have just ended up sitting alone with my headphones listening to ChipTunes and way too focused on drawing.

Yup, I was the last one to finish. Maybe someday I'll find the free time to upload my little creation (27 pages, 22 hours!)

24 Hour Comic Challenge!

So, last night I cooked some rice with half of a lime and some garlic and salt. As it was finishing up I mixed in a chopped carrot and onion. When it was finished I mixed in a little butter and some softened garbanzo beans. Tossed it in the fridge to cool.

Then, this morning, I added some chopped celery and red pepper. Toss the whole mess in a mason jar and TaDa!

This is kind of how I prepared for PAX, too. Power food! Hippie Power! Whatever! It's delicious and nutritious and I'm not going to have to worry about buying any food during the 24 hour challenge or getting hungry. Plus I'm bringing a ton of apples I picked from a local tree and some bananas.

So, 10am Saturday to 10 am Sunday are the 24 hours that make up this years 24 hour comic challenge. Starting from scratch you make a 24 page comic in 24 hours. Bam! Check out more at Scott McCloud's site. Luckily for us Spokanites, Merlyns and The ComicSmith Guild have a whole even planned for local participants! Super-mega Awesome!

Allen Duffy & Andrew Taylor both put off the introductory Art in the Humanities class until now. We had to do a project about framing our perspective on art; from Urban to Rural. This is what we turned in today.

Oh, and the top of the frame says Mysteries That Hunt and Howl and it was an awesome article in the New York Times about Coyotes.

Now that's my kinda notebook!

Small and thin so I can carry it everywhere and it fits snuggly in my already cramped book bag. Yay!

I had an old pad of grid paper so I ripped up a few sheets and sewed this baby up. Sewing through cardboard is pretty sweet, I gotta say.

AND I finally used up my roll of 100 yards of white thread! The same thread I used for my carrot book and Paper Trails art installation a couple lifetimes ago.

Serious Blog

On July 11, 2010 Arlene Applegate died fighting cancer. I lived in Spokane, she lived in Spokane & she was totally my Aunt. She wasn't technically my aunt (my cousin's, wife's mother), but we hit it off and I loved her.

Before she passed I was able to visit her and one of the last things she said to me was that "sometimes people come into our lives when we most need them and disappear when we don't."

We all love you and miss you very much Arlene. You're always with us.

whoa! Bummed I missed last Friday, but I don't have internet in my cave and I didn't have access to a scanner! Oh well, luckily my buddy Allen gave me the heads up on the Mars Lab being open (another computer lab on campus)

So, switching it up, switching it up! Done with digital inks for now, so here's some brush work on too small of a page mixed up with some digital greys and zip-a-tones.

Oh, and the Scott Pilgrim movie was amazing.

Here's a little something I sketched for a good friend of mine I got to see over the weekend. Bob. Bob lives in Portland, Bob plays ultimate and plays awesome music. (On a side note, Bob is also the heart and/or soul of the band State of Nature which, one could say, is still in the works. We're taking a break, what with the 300+ distance between members). Anyway, the sketch is for a band he plays drums for, Bad Chuck.

I think I'm overdoing it with the tones. I'm not sure they're adding enough to the clarity of the image nor are they that visually interesting... it's like a boring color image, but in grey tones. Next week I'ma try something different, maybe more textures.

I'm stoked to go see Inception tonight with Jamie and Meg, sounds like it's going to be awesome!

So, I've been crazy excited for the Scott Pilgrim game: a game combining comics, Paul Robertson's pixel-gasmic shenanigans, and the tunes of Anamanaguchi?! Sign me the f*** up. So, then I got excited for the movie (in relation to the game). Last week I finally bought some of the Scott Pilgrim comics and... well... if my face had pants, they would be jizzed in. Scott Pilgrim (and Bryan Lee O'Malley due to 'association') jizzed in my life's pants.

Needless to say, I'm super-stoked for the 6th volume of Scott Pilgrim, the movie and the game. yup... yup!
